I love the illustrations, kid-friendly language and analogies used to make the concepts easy to understand and to implement. The concepts are therapeutically sound. One of the activities that I love to do with kids who have anxiety or need help learning self-regulation skills is to help them make their own “cope-cake”. The cool thing is that it is personalized to them and the image of a cupcake takes most of us to a “happy place” in our thoughts. I left room around of the top of the cupcake so kids can drawn or glue on pics of things that they like and/or things that make them feel calm as extra “sprinkles” on their cupcake.

The author sells a book that I bought on Amazon called “The Worry Wars: An Anxiety Workbook for Kids and Their Helpful Adults!” that is full of fabulous strategies but is rather pricey ($40.00…. I was able to get on sale for $30.00).

Kohl’s is a fabulous place to get large hardcover books & a matching plush animal for just $5.00 each! Plus a portion of the sales goes to a good cause. Their latest Kohl’s Cares campaign includes some books & plush from Leo Lionni. I already had a small board book version of “A Color of His Own” but couldn’t resist getting this nice large hardcover version & the adorable plush chameleon at my local Kohl’s. The book has the following opportunities for kids yoga: bird, fish, elephant, pig, chameleon (plank), heather (flower), tiger, leaf, grass, mushroom (child’s pose). The book is also great for vocabulary & colors and has a fabulous message of friendship.

The cool thing is that I can use the same plush with “The Mixed Up Chameleon” by Eric Carle (another great Kohl’s Cares purchase back in 2011). It has the following opportunities for kids yoga: chameleon (plank), tree, flower, sun stretch & breath, polar bear, flamingo, fox, fish, deer, giraffe, turtle, elephant, seal, rainbow. Love the message about being yourself.

The key is to download the PDFs you want to your computer since that website frequently disappears for several months (guessing while it is being updated). I always get the color & black-white versions of the printables.

My favorite therapy activity today was using the Tiggly Safari app with the shape styluses on my iPad to create lots of opportunities for language, listening, matching, sustained attention, joint attention and tons of fun! This particular patient is a preschooler with Autism and newly emerging verbal skills. I use symbols with him in a combo of PECS communication, as a visual support for choices and as aided language input. His smiles & giggles were the highlight of my day. :)

There are currently 10 Tiggly apps and three different sets of styluses. Here are some free printable symbols that I made for my patients who use PECS to be able to choose a particular Tiggly app as well as which stylus they want to use. Now that I have the images created, I can also import them into a variety of AAC apps as fringe vocabulary for a couple of my patients who have a high interest in these particular apps.

As I was organizing my stash of therapy toys I noticed that the last 3 toys I bought all have similar sensory properties. Most of the kids on my caseload have Autism and it is always an adventure to find things to spark their interest enough for them to engage and communicate. With over 25 years experience as a SLP under my belt I’ve gotten pretty good at spotting toys with features that many of my patients with Autism will LOVE ;)

The Wonder Wheel has been great for targeting go/stop, fast/slow, on/off (the suction cup is a little difficult for most kids to remove from the table with out help). It has also been a fave with one of my patients who has a visual impairment. It has a very pleasant sound similar to a rainstick.

The wooden one has been named “ball mountain” by one of my patients. It has been magical to watch his play evolve over several session from self exploration -> tolerating an adult to sit near him -> showing enjoyment with an adult sitting near him -> him imitating inviting an adult to play with him -> him spontaneously inviting an adult to play with him and sustaining several minutes of joint attention during play. The bell has a very pleasant sensory-friendly tone.

The ball drop tower set was quite a bargain when I found one that came with a set of two priced similarly to a single. Great for targeting short/tall, go/stop, on/off, together/apart, more, roll, through, around, down, hole and colors. The balls have tiny balls inside them with a faint rainstick-like sound. This one had so many language opportunities that I made symbols for it for PECS and Aided Language Stimulation. I keep symbols in the container with that toy so they are always available. When a particular patients shows interest in that toy then I add those symbols to their PECS book, AAC app or AAC device.

I have several patients who have meltdowns at the sight of typical flashcards but magically participate in naming pics as we feed them into the Fisher Price Piggy Bank. So I made these in Boardmaker today so I’ll have an easy grab-and-go set of early vocabulary cards / coins without having to dig through the materials closet at work. I am NOT planning on attaching these to the plastic coins that come with the piggy bank. That would be fun but would require several extra sets of those coins and would not fit well to the rapid pace I often use to keep kids with Autism, ADHD and other special needs engaged. These are sized to fit the slot at the top of the original version of this toy. Not sure why Fisher Price keeps messing with restyling this toy…. The original version is nice and sturdy. I’ve had mine about 10 years and it has withstood constant use with patients with pretty extreme behaviors. Definitely worth looking for at garage sales or thrift shops.

Don’t have the Fisher Price Piggy Bank? You could really use any toy that has a large enough slot or opening. I also have a Fisher Price Cookie Jar and call the cards “cookies” when I use it. There is a vintage Playskool mailbox still hanging around in the toy closet at work. When I’ve used it, I call the cards “letters”. And the Woozle from the Feed the Woozle game is fun to use with older kids. Be creative. You likely already have old toys that you can re-purpose to entice kids into participating

A word about using props like this in therapy….. Of course I don’t want kids to only name pics in the context of having a specific toy or prop present. So I may use a variety of props and then have a well thought out plan for how I will fade out the props. This is especially important when working with kids with Autism. It is also important to use a variety of examples. So these would not be the only pictures I would use to teach this vocabulary.

I am NOT planning on attaching these to the plastic coins that come with the piggy bank. That would be fun but would require several extra sets of those coins and would not fit well to the rapid pace I often use to keep kids with Autism, ADHD and other special needs engaged. I stumbled across research on the developmental sequence for irregular past tense verbs as I was writing new goals for one of my 6 year old patients. I had always found myself a bit frustrated with the existing card decks available to target irregular past tense when first introducing them to young kids. Now I realize why. There is a wide range of ages in which these develop. So I created cards in Boardmaker to target the earliest developing ones. I am also sharing a data collection sheet with the norms included.

Love using the GoTalk Now Plus AAC app to make communication pages to use with books! It’s amazing to have access to the PCS Boardmaker symbols, SymbolStix symbols, GoTalk symbols and easily search online for pictures all within one app. Plus it’s easy to export the whole page as a PDF to then print and cut apart the symbols to add to kids PECS books. {Teaching Prepositions & Spatial Concepts} Most of the kids on my caseload have Autism or other special needs that tend to make understanding spatial concepts and using prepositions very challenging. I use a combination of visual supports, real objects, movement, AAC and apps when tackling these goals.

I uploaded a template to the Attainment Company, Inc.‘s GoTalk Now AAC Online Gallery for “Prepositions & Spatial Concepts for the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Puppy’s Activity Home”. Includes front, back, side, in front, behind, beside, through, in & out. Search for “puppy” in the public gallery from within the app to find it.

I made a set of 30 two-sided printable activity cards for the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Puppy’s Activity Home inspired by ones in the Positional Words Resource Box by Lakeshore Learning and the Hello Sunshine Game by Think Fun (both are fabulous visual ways to teach kids about prepositions & spatial concepts). The cards are color coded (10 brown for the puppy, 10 purple for the monkey, 5 orange for the car & 5 green for the frog) and the preposition is in that same color to make it stand out from the rest of the text.

I love the Hello Sunshine game. Unfortunately it appears that it is no longer readily available …. definitely worth adding to your list of things to look for at garage sales or thrift shops.

The Positional Words Resource Box is a “must have” for any SLP working with kids. It briefly went off the market so I grabbed mine as soon as I saw it was back.

Puppy's Pronouns and Sentence Building - Free Printable - made by Angela Moorad, MS, CCC-SLP at OMazing Kids

{Teaching Pronouns} Most of the kids on my caseload have Autism or other special needs that tend to make understanding and using pronouns very challenging. I use a combination of visual supports, role playing with people, AAC and apps when tackling these goals. Some kids have a hard time hearing the difference between “he” and “she” so I add visual cues for lip shape as needed. The Fisher Price Puppy’s Home was such a huge hit in OMazing Kids speech therapy that I bought two more items to go with it to target the pronouns “he” and “she”. Of course I had to make visual supports to go along with that. I also included cards for prepositions, a few actions, three colors, etc. so we can build sentences. Here are the free printables:

After comparison shopping, I found the best deals on Walmart.com. I love how wide and low profile the cars are and the size of the puppy characters. Several of my patients who usually have difficulty playing with toy cars have been able to “push” these with just a flick of the fingers. There are sound effects when you push the car (but those can also be turned off).

Simple Problem and Solution Puzzle Pairs - post

Ever look and look for materials to target a goal for a patient but just not find what you are looking for? Happens to me frequently so that’s why I end up making so many materials. I have a 6 year old patient with Autism who amazes me every week with his progress so I am constantly writing new goals. I recently added a goal for very basic problem solving since the ability to do that ties into the ability to function in social situations. But all the materials I found were way too complex as a starting point. So here is a printable with a set of 12 simple problem and solution puzzle pairs that I made to use with him. I purposefully made the puzzle shapes the same so he can’t just guess based on which ones fit together correctly (yup… I’ve had numerous patients do that with self-correcting puzzle pairs). Sharing it here since I’m sure other SLPs could benefit from having these

{Power of Visuals} Gotta LOVE the power of visual supports when working with kids with special needs! I have a patient who has had the hardest time understanding and using pronouns (he/she) and prepositions/spatial concepts. He doesn’t have Autism but most of the strategies that I use with that population are helpful for him. The use of visual support cue cards with a picture of a boy or girl, the rule for when to use the pronoun and a picture and description of the mouth shape for “he” vs. “she” in every session for several weeks finally paid off today! So cool to witness the moment it finally clicked for this child. I was able to fade the cue cards today and he had a solid ability to both understand and use these two pronouns correctly. I’m tackling the prepositions/spatial concepts using a similar concept but instead of printed cue cards I’m using the GoTalk Now AAC app as a visual support. Today was the first session where I finally saw the first signs of it clicking for him too. I’m sure for this child it’s the consistent visual + auditory feedback from the AAC app combined with placing a high interest object in/on/under a mini trashcan from the dollar store. I have other prepositions programmed but have them hidden until he masters these first three.
